'On a Mission from God'

The Blues Brothers were 'on a mission from God' to save an orphanage. They went about it in very unorthodox ways, but they did it. In some ways, Jesus did the same. Jesus was on a mission from God to save the world, and he did not go about it in all the expected ways! Listen to what Jesus said about his mission when he was given opportunity to speak in his hometown synagogue:
"And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to [Jesus]. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
Jesus said, 'God is with me to do a task that you have only dreamed about. This mission is so huge that it will renew the whole world by initiating the Year of the Lord's Favor.' And Jesus went about it in unorthodox ways as he constantly said, 'you have heard it said..., but I tell you...' Jesus was God coming to serve rather than be served, to bring forgiveness rather than condemnation, to offer himself as a sacrifice rather than demanding sacrifice. Jesus proclaimed the Father's kingdom, healed the sick, set people free, and said this is only the beginning of the renewal of the entire world. 'Good news! God is becoming King and he is doing it through Jesus! And therefore, God's justice, God's peace, and God's world is going to be renewed. And in the middle of that, of course, it's good news for you and me.' (N. T. Wright)
This requires us to ask two questions about ourselves: How is Jesus' mission being fulfilled in me? and What part do I play in Jesus' mission from God? Jesus set into motion the grandest adventure of all, and has called you and equipped you with the Holy Spirit and me to be a part of his creative, beautiful, and glorious work.
