Christmas is a reminder that we are not alone in the world. Jesus is Emanuel which means ‘God With Us’! As we go through life, no matter how difficult and dire situations may seem, God is always here for us. God didn’t wait for us to ‘get it together’ and be ‘good enough’ to receive his love and grace. In fact, it was during one of the darkest periods of Israel’s history that God sent Jesus which means ‘God Saves’! God has always been the initiator of our healing. God has always been the One who reaches out when our relationship with Him is strained. God will never leave us alone to suffer the consequences of our bad choices and sins. God sent Jesus who promised to never leave us or forsake us: I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.’(Matthew 28:20)
Not only does God come to us and promise to be with us, God brings other people into our lives. Notice that Mary was not asked to do something beyond herself with no other human support. God orchestrated a whole family support system. Gabriel was sent to tell Zachariah that his wife (Mary’s cousin) Elizabeth would have a child who would herald the Messiah’s coming. That child would later be known as John the Baptist. Gabriel also spoke to Joseph in a dream and convinced him to throw in his lot with Mary to give her the support needed at this critical juncture in their lives and God’s plan of salvation for the world. Joseph, ‘being a righteous man’, took Mary to be his wife and to raise Jesus as his own. Finally, upon being told she was ‘highly favored’ and being invited to give birth to God’s child, Gabriel informed Mary that Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy. What God was going to do in Mary, God had already done for Elizabeth. The old and the young would both be blessed with children and be each other’s cheerleaders, champions, and encouragers. Mary immediately ran to be with Elizabeth until the birth of John. God places us in families of faith so we can conceive the inconceivable, so we can have faith born out of the work of God all around us.
You are not alone this Christmas or any other day of the year. God has come to be with you, if you will make room for Him in your heart. Look around you. Notice all the people of faith who are living examples of God’s beautiful work in the world. Whenever you are in a time of distress, remember that God has come for you and is at work all around you. Allow this good news give birth to a renewed faith in God’s good plan for you.
