'Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing!'

We often get lost in the weeds and complexities of life at work, home, and even in the church. We lose sight of our vision which tells us why we are doing what we are doing. A good vision statement is clarifying, reorients our efforts, and whittles away the extraneous things that distract us. What is ‘the main thing’ for the people of God? I think Jesus cast the vision beautifully and simply: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ …and …‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”(Matt 22:37-39) So why are we here: to Love God and to love others. Simple, right? It takes the whole rest of Scripture to help us understand the living out of this vision in our many situations at home, work, and church.
Here are some general practices that help us keep the main thing the main thing:
- Connect deeply with God in worship and with fellow believers in small groups.
- Grow Intentionally through daily Bible study, scriptural meditation, and prayer.
- Serve joyfully within the walls of the church to build up the body and beyond the walls of the church to share the love of Christ.
- Lead courageously as Christ did full of grace and truth to build up your family, colleagues, and community in a way that honors God.
Loving God and loving others is clear and simple, but it requires 100% of who we are - heart, soul, mind, and strength. Are you keeping the main thing the main thing? What one practice is God calling you to engage more deeply? As we together focus on loving God and loving others, we will find life that is truly life.
Blessed to be a blessing,
