'Abounding with Life'

We all want to be ‘abounding with life’, don’t we? Most of us know that there is more to life than we are experiencing. We want more peace and we want those we love to flourish. We all can imagine ourselves abounding with life, but we often feel powerless to achieve it. Fortunately, it is not up to us with our limited understanding, wisdom, insight and courage.
God desires to bring abundance into our lives. Think about that for a moment… The One who created you and everything around you loves you. God has and is giving his all for you to abound with life. Paul puts it this way, “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Cor 9:8)
Here are two ways to enter into God’s abundance. Beware! These are counterintuitive:
First, invest your treasure in God’s work. Jesus gave some incredible insight to the human condition when he said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We pay special attention to the things we put our money in. If we buy a stock or mutual fund, we begin to check it frequently. We become emotionally connected to that investment and consider what the future may look like if it succeeds. When you financially invest in the Kingdom of God through your church and other Christian non-profits, you will take a keen interest in God’s work in the world. When you do so, you will plug into God’s abundant life all around you.
Second, serve others. Life comes when we give – not when we take. Giving requires that we look beyond ourselves to see both the need of others, and what God has given us to meet those needs. John Wesley said, ‘One of the principal rules of life is to lose no occasion of serving God. Since God is invisible to our eyes, we are to serve him in our neighbor which he receives as if done to himself in person, standing visibly before us.’ When we serve others, we become part of God’s overflowing, abundant life. Thomas Brooks put it this way, “The best way to do ourselves good is to be doing good to others.”
We cannot grasp for abundant life. When we grasp for life we see it slip through our fingers. Abundant life comes to us when we give and serve. I encourage you to invest in the kingdom of God with your money and your service if you want to live abundantly and find the attendant rewards of peace, joy and satisfaction. I tell the congregations I serve, “This is a money-back guarantee. If you are not more blessed when you give to God’s work, we will give you your money back". So far there haven’t been any takers.
Abounding with Life,
