'A Double Portion'

When Elijah was coming to the end of his ministry, Elisha was chosen to succeed him. Elijah passed his cloak of prophetic authority to Elisha. Then Elisha said to Elijah, “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit!” (2 Kings 2:9) That seems awfully bold. It could sound like, “I want to be twice as effective as you were.” I don’t think that is the case. I think Elisha knew how much he needed the Holy Spirit to be a prophet of God. But it is more than that. Elisha wanted to be as effective or even more than Elijah. How many times have you said or heard, “I wish I was half the person so-and-so is”. That was not the mindset of Elisha. While the intent is to pay honor to the person, it is a cop out of our responsibility to take what has been given to us and make it even better.
If Elisha asked for only half the power of Elijah, he would only be half as effective. If Elisha then passed his authority to the next prophet who had the same idea, that prophet would be operating at one quarter of what Elijah did. You get the picture. By the fourth generation after Elijah, the contemporary prophet would only be doing 6% of what Elijah did. That is a recipe for disaster! Why allow God’s work to become less and less?!
We have been handed a great legacy of faith here at Munholland; 83 years ago Susie May Munholland and 32 others planted a new church in Metairie. They were excited and all in. They offered their gifts and their resources for its success. In fact, Susie May offered the first gift for the purchase of the land we now worship on. They whole-heartedly did what God was calling them to do.
We are now four generations into the Munholland ministry. The power that first group exerted bore incredible fruit. Every generation has to answer that question. If each generation floated along on the faith of those who have gone before, we would only be operating at 6% of their spirit. If each generation asked for a double portion, we would be doing 16 times the work of those who had the vision to start this church!
I want a double portion of their spirit! I’ve decided to be all in; I want my gifts and resources to be multiplied by God for extraordinary ministry! The founders of Munholland excitedly built our church with great hopes and dreams of ministry to come. We now have the opportunity to excitedly renovate this church with a vision of renewed ministry for the generations to come. Let’s do it with a double portion of the spirit of those who went before us.
